Bodybuilding art...

2006-09-05 01:08:15 AM
I mentioned Robert Kennedy, an accomplished artist as well as publisher
of MuscleMag International, of course, and was Googling for Steve
Douglass (couldn't think of his last name at the time - heck, might
have it wrong still), former art director for that magazine, iirc.
Stumbled across another Steve, however:

Very nice...
but never forget _this_ artist:

I understand that he was frequently a contest judge, and many of his
artworks were based on current top body builders of that year.

Interesting style. A mixture of Frank Frazetta and Maxfield Parrish.

I'll have to look those two up, thanks!
Boris Vallejo's fantasy art has been some of my favorite for years.
He did a _lot_ of book covers for science fiction and fantasy paperbacks.

I'm sure you'll recognize Frazetta's work, Om. His art was used on a
number of Conan paperback covers among other things, of course. And if
you're an old Molly Hatchet fan then you've certainly seen his art:

And I wouldn't be surprised if you recognized Parrish's work, too.

He had a very impressive physique back in the day, too. And Julie Bell
by his side. Awesome.

Oh, believe me, I won't. One of my favorites along with Frazetta (also
mentioned in this thread).

That's no surprise as his girlfriend, Julie Bell, was a competitive
bodybuilder and regardless of that fact, Boris obviously had a strong
interest in the sport. His physique was fantastic. Along the lines of
Zane, imo.
Vallejo's website <www.imaginistix.com/>states he and Bell,
also a fantastic artist, married in 1994.

Without Googling, one that comes to mind immediately was a work based
on Lee Labrada. Yes, Vallejo is an incredible artist.

Never read a lot of Conan... :-)
I recall a lot of Boris art from Sharon Green and John Norton
paperbacks, as well as a number of other Sci-fi and Fantasy novels.
We have a couple of his art books with some biographical material.
My housemate also loves Vallejo.

I wonder what's happened to Labrada right now?
He had such a classic physique. I don't much care for the total freak
look that has developed in recent years.
It's just.....
not attractive.
The older more classic physiques like Lee's were breathtaking! I think
one of the uglier things is the huge thighs and the loss of the slim,
tapered waists. :-(

forums, more!

There are bodybuilders who possess the aesthetic appeal of the X-shaped
body or that slim, tapered waist you mention, however the winners of
today's contests mostly seem to fall in the gargantuan category.
For more of the "wasp waisted" bodybuilders you may want to take a look
at Robert Kennedy's magazine Reps which is oriented more towards the
aesthetic physique.

Cool, thanks!
You're welcome, naturally, Om.
And I mentioned the October 2006 issue of Muscle & Fitness elsewhere in
this newsgroup in relation to a book recommendation - _Brothers of
Iron_. The cover of that issue of M&F offers Stan McQuay
<www.stanmcquay.com/>as stark contrast to the "total freak look
that has developed in recent years."
Any who lament the GH guts, what have you, may appreciate this McQuay
quote:
"My ultimate goal however would be to help bring the sport of
bodybuilding back to an age of aesthetics. The look of Greek gods not
freak gods." From: www.bodybuilding.com/fun/drobson46.htm
But although I think McQuay is an incredible physique competitor, I
have no problem with Coleman winning the O for another decade. ;o)

Yeah. but they need to change the name of the competition the "Night of
